A patio is supposed to be the easy part of your yard in Montclair. Then the ants show up between the pavers, a wasp nest appears under the table and mosquitoes chase everyone inside by dusk. Most patio pests are there for the same three reasons: food, water and shelter. Fix those, and a lot of the problem goes away on its own. Below, we'll walk through who's living around your patio, how to tell what you have and what to try before you call a pro. If you'd rather hand it off, our outdoor pest control team can inspect the whole area for you.
Why Pests Love Patios
A patio packs a lot of pest habitat into a small space. Pavers and stone hold heat and leave gaps underneath. Planters, furniture cushions and stacked chairs make dark, protected hiding spots. Saucers, buckets and clogged drains hold water after rain. And every meal outside leaves crumbs, spills and sweet drink residue behind. Add a porch light that draws insects at night, and you've built a small ecosystem right outside your back door.
The Usual Patio Pests And How To Spot Them
- Ants. Small brown or black ants often nest under pavers and slabs. The giveaway is little mounds of sand or soil pushed up between the joints. They forage for crumbs, spilled soda and pet food. Ants also nest in the mulch beds that border many patios, which we cover in our guide to ants in mulch.
- Spiders. Orb weavers string webs between railings, chairs and light fixtures, while wolf spiders hunt along the ground at night. Spiders go where the insects are, so lots of spiders usually means lots of other bugs.
- Wasps. Paper wasps build open, umbrella-shaped nests under table edges, umbrella ribs, railings and eaves. Yellow jackets often nest in the ground or in wall voids and get pushy around food and sweet drinks in late summer.
- Earwigs. These brown insects with pincers on the back end hide by day under pots, pavers, cushions and damp mulch, and come out at night. They're harmless to people but unpleasant to find in a folded cushion.
- Mosquitoes. They breed in standing water, and it doesn't take much. A plant saucer, a toy left upside down or a clogged patio drain is enough.
Are Patio Pests Harmful?
Most of them are a nuisance more than a danger. Ants, earwigs and spiders around a patio rarely cause harm. Stinging insects are different. Wasps and yellow jackets will defend a nest, and a nest under the table you eat at is a real risk, especially for kids and anyone with a known sting allergy. If someone has trouble breathing or swelling spreads after a sting, see a doctor right away. Mosquitoes can carry diseases, so cutting down on bites matters for more than comfort. Our post on stopping Asian tiger mosquito bites explains why the daytime biters are often breeding in containers close to the house.
What You Can Do Before You Call A Pro
- Dump standing water every week. Empty saucers, buckets, toys and tarps. Clear patio drains and gutters so water moves.
- Clean up after every meal. Wipe tables, sweep crumbs and rinse sticky spills. Don't leave pet food bowls outside.
- Give plants some space. Move pots off the slab or onto risers, and keep mulch and dense plantings from piling up against the patio edge.
- Refill paver joints. Fresh polymeric or joint sand makes it harder for ants to nest underneath.
- Check for nests early. In spring, look under tables, chairs, umbrella ribs and railings. A small paper wasp nest is far easier to deal with than a big one in August.
- Store cushions dry. Bring them in or keep them in a dry box. Damp cushions are earwig hotels.
- Rethink the lights. Bright white lights draw insects, and the insects draw spiders. Turn off lights you don't need.
When It's Time To Call A Pro
A few ants and the odd spider are part of outdoor living. Call a professional when you find a wasp or yellow jacket nest near where people sit, when ants keep coming back no matter how clean the patio is, when ants start moving from the patio into the house or when mosquitoes make the yard unusable even after you've cleared standing water. Ground-nesting yellow jackets in particular aren't a DIY job.
What A Pro Visit Looks Like
EcoFusion starts with a thorough inspection of the patio and the rest of the property to find the pests, where they're nesting and the conditions drawing them in. From there, our NJ DEP-licensed technicians build a plan, apply targeted treatments with EPA-registered, eco-safe products and seal entry points so the pests don't move indoors. We follow Integrated Pest Management, which means fixing the conditions first and treating only where it's needed. Every visit is backed by our EcoGuard Guarantee, and same-day and next-day appointments are available.
Patio pests aren't a mystery once you know what they're after. Take away the water, the crumbs and the hiding spots, and your Montclair patio gets a lot quieter. If nests, ants or mosquitoes keep winning anyway, EcoFusion Pest Control can take a look and help you get the space back.
