The Squirrel Breeding Calendar
Gray squirrels in New Jersey typically produce two litters a year: one in late winter, often February through March, and a second in mid-summer, around June through July. Young squirrels are born hairless and helpless, and depend entirely on their mother for roughly ten to twelve weeks before they're able to move, feed, and eventually leave on their own. A nest found during either of those windows is more likely to include young than one found in fall.
Why Removing The Mother Too Early Backfires
If a mother squirrel is trapped or excluded before her young are mobile, the babies left behind can't follow her out and won't survive without her. What follows is rarely quick or clean — a slow die-off inside the wall or attic void that creates lingering odor, draws flies and other secondary pests, and often costs more to fully resolve than if the timeline had simply been respected from the start.

What The Right Timeline Actually Looks Like
When young are confirmed present, the standard approach is to monitor rather than force an exit, giving the litter time to mature to the point where the whole family can leave together. Once the young are weaned and mobile, one-way exclusion devices are installed at the entry point, letting every squirrel exit on its own schedule without any of them getting trapped back inside. Only after the space is confirmed clear does permanent sealing happen.
