If a little cloud of tiny white insects bursts upward and flutters around before settling back down, that's whitefly — a moth-like flier about the size of a pinhead that scatters the moment its leaf gets disturbed. If nothing moves at all, and what you're looking at just sits there resembling a fleck of cotton or a smudge of mold, that's mealybug. It doesn't fly, and it barely even crawls, so disturbing the plant does almost nothing to it. That one reaction — fly away or stay put — is the single clearest tell between the two.
What Each One Actually Looks Like
Beyond behavior, the two also just look different once you know what to check for. Whitefly is small, roughly a sixteenth of an inch, with powdery white wings and a body shaped a bit like a miniature moth. Clusters usually collect on the underside of leaves, where they pierce the tissue and feed on sap. That feeding is what causes the yellowing, stunted growth, and leaf drop that often gets blamed on watering problems instead. Mealybug runs a little bigger, somewhere between an eighth and a quarter inch, and instead of wings it wears a waxy, cottony coating that makes a cluster look like a tuft of fuzz wedged into a leaf joint or stem crevice.
